SCOPE AND MOTIVATION

The Metaverse was recently introduced as the next generation of the Internet, where users can play, work, and socialize in a virtual shared space through their digital avatars. The development of the Metaverse opens new ways to efficiently address problems challenging in the physical world, such as remote work, distance learning, and social isolation. Thanks to recent advanced technologies in virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, digital twins, and blockchain, the Metaverse is quickly transforming from an infancy concept to reality in the near future.

As the Metaverse is still in its early stage, various issues must be fully addressed to guarantee its success, especially in networking and communications. For example, the Metaverse will require new network models that can support a massive number of users simultaneously and provide a low-latency experience to enable real-time interactions. Additionally, security will be a significant concern as the Metaverse will be a prime target for cyberattacks. Therefore, novel network architectures, standards, protocols, and algorithms must be developed to enable robust, secure, and immersive experiences for users in the Metaverse. This symposium aims to provide an international venue for researchers from academia and industry to discuss recent research advances in future network-enabled Metaverse.
